WHAT'S THE MANUZIO PROJECT?

The Manuzio project (named after the famous publisher from Venice who in the XVI century improved the printing techniques created by Gutenberg) has the ambition to make a noble idea real: the idea of culture available to everybody. How? Making books, graduation theses, articles, tales or any other document which can be memorized by a computer available all over the world, any minute and free. Via modem, or using floppy disks (in which case there's only the cost of the disk and the delivery), it is already possible to get hundreds of books. And the Manuzio project needs only few people to make such a masterpiece as Dante Alighieri's Divina Commedia available to millions of people.

WHICH ARE THE TEXTS ALREADY AVAILABLE FROM THE MANUZIO PROJECT AND HOW TO GET THEM?

Tha complete list of the Manuzio project "electronic books" is placed in the 00index.txt file --the length, in bytes, written beside the file name indicates the length of the text after being compressed using the ZIP utility--.

All those who have an access to Internet can get to this collection of texts: they only need to connect to the University of Milan via ftp: ftp://sunsite.dsi.unimi.it/pub/culture/Manuzio or ftp://ftp.dsi.unimi.it/DSI/basagni/Manuzio.

Those who don't have a modem can ask for the delivery of one or more floppy disks containing the texts of the Manuzio project (10.000 Lit.= 7 U.S. $ each disk as a refund for the expenses) and pay using the postal current account 73225005 registered under:

Liber Liber
c/o E-text S.r.l.
Viale Pasteur, 78
00144 Roma
Italy

and writing as cause on the reverse: "The undersigned <name and address> asks for <number of floppy disks> containing the texts of the Manuzio project".

As an alternative, it is possible to send money by cheque or money-order (which is faster). Of course, one must never forget to write, in clear capital letters, his or her address!

I LIKE YOUR PROJECT, CAN I HELP?

Of course you can! To work with us is very easy. Your help can be of different kinds:
  1. sending money. Thanks to your money, Liber Liber will choose some of the more interesting masterpieces of literature --those that are not under copyright-- and will make an electronic version of them which, after an accurate revision, will be put on line, available to everybody, free. You can send your money by:
    • cheque;
    • postal money-order;
    • postal corrent account 73225005 (as cause write: "Grant in favour of the Manuzio project").

    In any case, the money must be entered in the account of:

    Liber Liber
    c/o E-text S.r.l.
    Viale Pasteur, 78
    00144 Roma
    Italy

    Any grant in favour of the "Liber Liber" cultural association can NOT be dectracted from one's taxes.

    EVEN 1 $ IS SOMETHING!

  2. subscription to Liber Liber (see the following point).
  3. sending the electronic text of a book that you have reversed.

    NOTICE: Before starting to make the electronic version of a book, it would be advisable to contact Liber Liber, to get information about technical details and to avoid wasting time on a text that someone's already reversing.
